Diary of a Spider by Doreen Cronin
Reread the story. What are the main things that happened in this story? If it is a nice day, go on a nature walk and look for worms and/ or spiders. Bring along a sketch pad and sketch a few that you find. How do actual spiders and worms behave compared to the spider and worm in the stories that you read? How do we know that these stories are examples of fantasy? Discuss.
The student will create a story in the style of Doreen Cronin. It will be written in the form of diary entries. Watch the video: “Getting Started with My Diary Story.”
Complete the handout: “Brainstorming Bubble,” to organize your thoughts before writing the story. The child needs to decide upon a main character- perhaps an insect like the stories we’ve read, or an animal. The child needs to think of a setting, a problem, and a solution.
